SDAS

The Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme (SDAS) was developed in cooperation with milk producers, processors and regulatory authorities. It is designed with sustainability at its core providing a uniform mechanism of recording and monitoring the sustainability of Irish dairy at farm level. It is the first national dairy scheme of its type anywhere in the world – a rigorous, independently verified and internationally accredited (European Standard for Product Certification – ISO 17065: 2012).

Currently 95.5% of Irish dairy farmers are certified to the SDAS standard. Bord Bia inspectors audit the farm against quality assurance criteria in relation to areas such as traceability, animal health and welfare, pollution control and farm safety, as well as collecting data regarding the sustainability of the farm.

Participation in the SDAS scheme has an important knock-on impact on the food chain, with sustainable sourcing a mandatory target for Irish dairy producers signed up to Origin Green.
