Seafood

Ireland is surrounded by the wild Atlantic Ocean and these cold, clear waters provide ideal growing conditions for premium quality seafood.  Our organic salmon and mussels and wild caught fish and shellfish are enjoyed around the globe in more than 70 countries. Annually we export more than €550m of seafood in value and 156,000 tonnes in volume.

Committed to Sustainable Fishing

A proud member of the EU, Ireland’s fishing industry produces seafood to the highest food safety standards. The EU quota system sets annual catch limits on fish. Environmental quality schemes ensure the traceability, provenance and quality of Irish seafood.  Irish fishermen implement a range of conservation measures to secure the future viability of Irish fish stocks.

All leading Irish exporters are members of Origin Green, Ireland’s national sustainability programme.  Origin Green commits Irish seafood producers to improve raw material sourcing, emissions, energy, waste, water, biodiversity and social sustainability.

For wild fishery products, the BIM backed Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) demonstrate Ireland’s commitment to achieving and maintaining sustainable fisheries.  FIPs are a globally recognised, science-based approach to assessing and improving fisheries. In aquaculture, the Irish sector is committed to organic production and 100% of all Irish salmon is now certified as organic.
